2012 Can-Am Outlander DS 450 Review

In developing the DS 450, we truly reinvented how a sport quad is built. With the industry’s first no-weld all-aluminum frame, hollow rear axle and inverted brake calipers. We then pushed the concept even further with two terrain-specific X models. The tight-woods racing DS 450 X xc and motocross-inspired DS 450 X mx. Both are equipped with industry-leading features and are ready to race right out of the box. You can read on. But eventually, you’re just going to have to ride one.

With the DS 450, we found a new way to build a sport quad. Setting new standards for the industry, it features the first no-weld, all-aluminum frame, hollow rear axle and inverted brake calipers. It’s a machine ready to race with less unsprung weight, more mass centralization and, as you’ve come to expect from Can-Am, a better power-to-weight ratio. You demand performance from a sport quad. 2012 Can-Am Outlander DS 450 Features and Benefits

45.3-hp Rotax 4-TEC 449cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder 4-stroke engine

The DS 450 is equipped with a 449 cc 4-stroke EFI Rotax engine, offers the largest bore (97 mm) and the largest intake valves (38 mm) from the DOHC 4-valve head with 97 x 60.8 mm bore and stroke. The EFI uses the largest throttle body (46 mm), 16-bit CPU with 32-MHz clock speed and an almost straight intake path. With a concept referred to as ''Durchzugskraft'' or flow dynamics optimization, the engine breathes easily and can produce more power. The DS 450 delivers the best power-to-weight ratio.

Hollow rear axle

The hollow, high-strenght steel axle has been shortened by extending the lenght of aluminum hubs. The final design: a shorter axle mated with "spyder" all-aluminum hubs with precision machined splines and longer arms. The rear unsprung weight of the DS 450 is therefore reduced, which also has a significant impact on mass centralization and dry weight.

No weld, ALTEC twin pyramidal aluminum frame

A maximum strength, no-weld, all-aluminum frame that uses a twin pyramidal structure. Major components are firmly secured with aluminum fasteners called lock-bolts. The frame is stronger yet much lighter than a traditional ladder frame.

R-Type forged aluminum double A-arm front suspension

Longest aluminum upper and lower A-arms for a 46-inch sport ATV, one-piece aluminum knuckle and a short spindle.

Inverted front brake calipers

Inverted twin-piston front brake calipers offer impressive stopping power because of the larger brake discs (182 mm). By putting the caliper "inside" a peripheral brake disc, the diameter can be increased as close as possible to the inside of the wheel. This set-up allows for larger brake discs and improved stopping power and feel. Plus, the peripheral disc brake leaves room inside to push the lower A-arm ball-joint deep inside the wheel.

Along with all the updated features, benefits and performance levels of the standard Renegade 1000, the X xc also gets added components, making it stand out even more. It is the only sport-oriented ATV with power steering available on the market.

The Renegade X xc has again achieved new standards for sport performance blended with 4x4 ability. This race-inspired cross-country ATV packs a mighty 82-hp Rotax 1000 or 71-hp 800R V-Twin engine begging you to put all that force to use on the trail. 2012 Can-Am Outlander Renegade 1000 X Xc Features and Benefits

New 82-hp Rotax 1000 V-Twin, liquid-cooled engine

This engine is the most powerful in the industry with 82-hp. The liquid-cooled, single overhead cam power plant has four valves per cylinder, a 46-mm throttle body and two VDO Siemens‡ fuel injectors. The EFI system keeps the 1000 engine's performance at its peak and a progressive throttle ensures power is manageable whether in precise rock crawling or opening it up on the straights.

Tri-mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS™)

Available on the X xc models only, the Tri-Mode DPS™ is calibrated specifically for aggressive trail riding and racing. It features three rider-selectable modes (MIN, MED and MAX) of steering assist depending on rider preference. The system is designed to offer less assist at high speed and more assist at low speed. This technology also includes a Direct Link setup that uses advanced magnetic field sensors for faster response to steering input than competitive technology, which then minimizes steering lag. Less kickback and more trail feedback is supplied to the operator because of the 50:1 final gear ratio, which is the largest in the industry. A high-capacity 50-amp motor means the DPS™ will never fade with heavy use and all DPS™-equipped models also come with the Visco-Lok† QE.

Large radiator with increased cooling capacity

The larger, more efficient radiator offers almost double the cooling capacity and keeps the engine running cool for optimal performance. The radiator capacity grew by 14 kW with the engineering updates.

Redesigned air box

The new air box was reconfigured and placed at a higher and more centralized location for filtering and processing air. The no-tools air box features a dual-room design that improves the air filtration process and the quality of air by capturing dirty air in one portion of the box and clean air in another section before it sends the air to the engine. Along with the relocated air box the air intake is also higher in the frame to improve the machine’s capabilities in the mud and water.

The proven Torsional Trailing arm Independent (TTI) rear suspension has been reconfigured to offer increased rigidity and improved suspension travel at 9.3 inches (236 mm) and includes a removable external sway bar. The updates lead to lower pivot points providing geometric squatting for improved traction and the transfer of power to the ground.
