2012 Can-Am Outlander DS 450 X mx Review
We took our industry-first, all-aluminum frame and added features to inspire any motocross rider. Ready to race right out of the box, competitive advantage comes standard on the DS 450 X mx. Like Kashima-coated KYB HPG front and rear shocks. Or ITP QuadCross MX PRO tires on black aluminum ITP T-9 wheels. Aluminum nerf bars. A raised (+1in.) steering stem with anti-vibe mounts. The X mx was built from the lessons learned – and success achieved – from racing multiple pro series.

2012 Can-Am Outlander DS 450 X mx Features and Benefits
45.3-hp Rotax 4-TEC 449cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder 4-stroke engine
The DS 450 is equipped with a 449 cc 4-stroke EFI Rotax engine, offers the largest bore (97 mm) and the largest intake valves (38 mm) from the DOHC 4-valve head with 97 x 60.8 mm bore and stroke. The EFI uses the largest throttle body (46 mm), 16-bit CPU with 32-MHz clock speed and an almost straight intake path. With a concept referred to as ''Durchzugskraft'' or flow dynamics optimization, the engine breathes easily and can produce more power. The DS 450 delivers the best power-to-weight ratio.
+ 2-in. double A-arms with adjustable caster and camber give a 50-in. front stance
At 50-in. (1,270 mm) wide, the DS 450 X mx meets the recognized standard for motocross racing with its stock A-arms. Racers will not have to purchase expensive aftermarket A-arms to take the X mx to the track and be competitive.
Electric start
Push-button electric start for easy start
KYB HPG C40 front shocks
Kashima-coated KYB HPG C40 aluminum piggyback front shocks with dual-speed compression, rebound and preload adjustments and 10.7 in. (272 mm) of travel
5-speed manual transmission
Competition-ready 5-speed manual transmission with foot-shifter and manual clutch lever. Features heavy-duty clutch and 9 friction plates with DirectLink mechanism.
KYB HPG C46 rear shock
Kashima-coated KYB HPG C46 aluminum remote reservoir rear shock with dual-speed compression, rebound and preload adjustments, and 10.7 in.(272 mm) of travel
Hollow rear axle
The hollow, high-strenght steel axle has been shortened by extending the lenght of aluminum hubs. The final design: a shorter axle mated with "spyder" all-aluminum hubs with precision machined splines and longer arms. The rear unsprung weight of the DS 450 is therefore reduced, which also has a significant impact on mass centralization and dry weight
7-in. (179 mm) factory-set ride height (175-lb rider)
Straight from the factory, the DS 450 X mx is prepped with a ride height of seven inches (178 mm). This height, along with the ATV being “dialed in” for a 175-pound rider (with gear), gives the DS 450 X mx a lower center of gravity and allows you to rail through the corners with confidence.
No weld, ALTEC twin pyramidal aluminum frame
A maximum strength, no-weld, all-aluminum frame that uses a twin pyramidal structure. Major components are firmly secured with aluminum fasteners called lock-bolts. The frame is stronger yet much lighter than a traditional ladder frame.
Adjustable-width hollow rear axle (from 46 in. [1.17 m] to 50 in. [1.27 m] by increments of 0.5 in. [12.7 mm] per spacer)
Many of top motocross pros are choosing to race with a rear width that is slightly narrower than the front-end width. This is possible with the DS 450 X mx Chromoly 4140 adjustable-width hollow axle. Adjustment from 46 (1,168 mm) to 50 inches (1,270 mm) is possible with 0.5-inch (13 mm) spacers.
Inverted front brake calipers
Inverted twin-piston front brake calipers offer impressive stopping power because of the larger brake discs (182 mm). By putting the caliper "inside" a peripheral brake disc, the diameter can be increased as close as possible to the inside of the wheel. This set-up allows for larger brake discs and improved stopping power and feel. Plus, the peripheral disc brake leaves room inside to push the lower A-arm ball-joint deep inside the wheel.
20x6-10 ITP QuadCross MX PRO front tires
High-performance ITP QuadCross MX Pro tires give maximized traction on track surfaces, especially for blue-grooved. Up front, 20-inch (508 mm) ITP QuadCross MX Pro tires mounted on 10-inch (254 mm) black, aluminum ITP T-9 wheels.
18x10-8 ITP QuadCross MX PRO rear tires
High-performance ITP QuadCross MX Pro tires give maximized traction on track surfaces, especially for blue-grooved. The rear tires are 18-inch motocross-ready tires complete with 8-inch (203 mm) black, aluminum ITP T-9 beadlock wheels with an inner reinforcement ring.
Black aluminum ITP 10x5 T-9 GP front wheels
Black aluminum ITP 8x8 T-9 Trac-lock rear wheels
Extra-strength extended 1-in. (25.4 mm) steering stem with anti-vibe mounts
A +1-inch (25 mm) extra-strength steering stem with anti-vibe mounts comes standard on the DS 450 X xc and the DS 450 X mx. This gives the racer a better feel for the ATV while in an attacking stance out on the course. There is no need to buy an aftermarket stem to be competitive. Mounted to the steering stem is an aluminum 6061-T6 taper-profile handlebar with square racing pad.
Aluminum nerf bars with removable netted heel guards
Straight from the factory, the DS 450 X mx comes complete with lightweight aluminum nerf bars with netted heel guards. If one desires, the nerf bars, side extensions and heel guards can be removed with ease.
Aluminum taper-profile handlebar with square pad
Aluminum front bumper, number plate ready
